01 March, 2010 DISCUSSION ON ARMENIAN - TURKISH RELATIONS HELD IN SPITAK number of views: 358
On 26 February a public discussion, “Significant Changes in Turkey’s Foreign Policy and Recent Developments in Armenian-Turkish Relations,” was held in the city of Spitak in Lori Marz. The event was initiated and implemented by the Institute for War and Peace Reporting’s Armenian branch, with the collaboration of Peace Dialogue NGO. A similar discussion was organized in Shirak Marz by IWPR staff. The discussions in marzes are aimed to overcome Yerevan’s monopoly on discussions of external policies of Armenia, to increase the participation of those who live in the marzes in the processes of Armenian-Turkish relations and in political developments, and make heard the voices of those who live in the marzes.
28 people - including media representatives, local government representatives, NGOs, political parties, students, lecturers, and teachers - participated from the cities of Vanadzor and Spitak in Lori Marz.
After the introductory speech of Edgar Khachatryan, director of Peace Dialogue NGO, presenting the speakers, a representative of IWPR Armenia, Zara Ghazaryan, spoke about activities and projects of the Armenian branch of IWPR, presented the goals and objectives of the “Building Bridges/Building Capacities in the South Caucasus” project in the framework of which the discussion was organized. After her Artak Shakaryan - Turkologist, analyst, and coordinator of Armenian-Turkish projects at the Eurasia Partnership Foundation—presented a speech. He talked about the influence of current developments in Armenian-Turkish relations, touched upon the positive and negative factors influencing Armenian-Turkish relations, and expectations for the near future.

After speeches finished participants had the opportunity to address their questions to speakers and in parallel an active exchange of ideas on this topic was launched.

Vanadzor youth has celebrated the international youth day on August 11 in the Vanadzor State Theater named after H. Abelyan with a photo exhibition and a concert. This was the first time that this holiday was celebrated so significantly in Vanadzor; more than five hundred people participated in the photo exhibition and in the concert. The preparatory activities for this project were started by Peace Dialogue NGO with the support of the NGO’s board members, NGO OWEN in Germany, and from individual contributions from German citizens. From May 2010, more than forty young people were participants in the photo contest and representative of music bands in Vanadzor were involved in the organization. more»

According to my observations, when watching news in Armenia you hear more words related to “Azerbaijan” and “Turkey” than “Armenia” sometimes, practically always in a negative sense, and - most problematically - practically always having the effect of deepening the enemy image within society.
